Parents and Students,

Welcome to Doyle High School!  I am always available for consultations and guidance.  Any student is welcome to schedule a conference for any reason, including career counseling, college and scholarship consultation, testing information, written recommendations, financial aide questions, or personal problems.  Except in cases of imminent personal danger, strict confidentiality is maintained.  I am always available for consultation and guidance, but the final responsibility for meeting graduation requirements rests with the students and parents.

Announcements

The Louisiana Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (LASFAA) is proud to offer to Louisiana High School students the opportunity to apply for the LASFAA High School Scholarship. LASFAA will award $500 non-renewable scholarships to high school students who complete the LASFAA High School Scholarship Application.  The deadline to apply for the scholarship is April 15. To apply, students may access the LASFAA web site at www.LASFAA.org and click on high school scholarship to complete the online application.  Students are selected randomly and are notified in August.  If you have questions, please e-mail Alvina Thomas, Immediate Past President for LASFAA at athomas@ladelta.cc.la.us.

Elks National Foundation Most Valuable Student Scholarship
In order to be eligible for an award, the student must be a high school senior and a U. S. citizen.  Judging criteria are scholarship (ACT/SAT scores), leadership, and financial need.  Historically, Louisiana recipients have scored a minimum of 22 on the ACT and 1020 on the SAT.
Scholarship awards: 
First Place Boy/Girl--$60,000 ($15,000 per year for four years)
Second Place Boy/Girl--$40,000 ($10,000 per year for four years)
Third Place Boy/Girl--$20,000 ($5,000 per year for four years)
494 Runners-up Awards of $4,000 ($1,000 for four years)

The U. S. Jaycee International Senate is sponsoring scholarships for high school students throughout the country. Applications are available in the Guidance Office.

The American Cancer Society’s Mid-South division is awarding college scholarships to young cancer survivors pursuing an undergraduate degree from an accredited university, community college, or vocational technical school.  Eligibility requirements and applications are available in the Guidance Office.

Louisiana Tech University School of Art is offering Freshman Art Scholarships in the amount of $15,000.  Deadline for entry is January 23, 2006.  Students must be a graduating senior with a minimum 3.0 GPA and meet Louisiana Tech requirements.  See Ms. Kelli for further details.

Wal-Mart has announced the availability of the 2006 Sam Walton Community Scholarship.  This is a non-renewable $1,000 award for the student's first year of undergraduate study at any accredited college or university. To qualify, the student must be a graduating high school senior and may not be a Wal-Mart or SAM'S CLUB Associate, or be the dependent of a Wal-Mart or SAM'S CLUB Associate.  Interested students should logon to www.walmartfoundation.org for more information.  Students will apply for the Sam Walton Community Scholarship at www.scholarshipadministrators.net.  This on-line scholarship opportunity is only available from November 1, 2005-January 20, 2006.

To receive a high school diploma with a Technical Endorsement, you must meet the following criteria:

Area of Concentration--Students must complete four electives credits in an area of concentration and two related elective credits.  The areas of concentration shall be developed locally by a district Curriculum-Design Team and approved by BESE.

Other Requirements:  BESE approved Industry Based certification or 3 college hours in a Career Technical area that articulate to a postsecondary institution, either by actually obtaining the credits and/or being waived from having to take such hours;
AND
A minimum of 90 work hours in work based learning experience.

To receive a high school diploma with an Academic Endorsement, you must meet the following criteria:

TOPS Core Curriculum + 1 Core  Course*
Beginning with incoming freshmen 2004-2005 and thereafter, the TOPS curriculum reflects the one additional unit of math or science.

Incoming freshmen 2003-2004 and prior are required to take the old TOPS curriculum plus one additional unit of Math, Science, or Social Studies.

Area of Concentration:--Students satisy this requirement by completing the Core Courses referenced above.  Students may also choose to complete four elective credits in an area of concentration and tow related elective credits including a computer related course.

GEE 21--Pass all four components with a score of Basic or above or one of the following combinations with the ELA score at Basic or above:
--1 Approaching Basic, 1 Mastery or Advanced, Basic or above in the remaining two

--2 Approaching Basic, 2 Mastery or Above

 

GPA/ACT--TOPS Opportunity GPA and an ACT of 23

Other Requirements:--1 Carnegie unit in an AP course with a score of 3 or higher on the AP exam OR
1 Carnegie unit in an IB course with a score of 4 or higher on the exam OR
3 College hours of non-remedial, articulated credit in core area (math, social studies, science, foreign language, or English)
 
     


 

TOPS

     The Tuition Opportunity Program for Students will pay for tuition to Louisiana Public Colleges and Louisiana Technical Colleges.  In order to be eligible, the students must complete the core curriculum requirements with a minimum of 2.5 core GPA.  The ACT score requirement is based on the average score for Louisiana students for the previous school year and may fluctuate from year to year.  The ACT requirement for graduates of 2005 will be a minimum of 20.  Students may pick up a copy of the TOPS requirements from their counselor
The ONLY application for TOPS is completion of the FAFSA.  A TOPS Financial Aid Meeting is held each year for senior students and parents.  Attendance of this meeting is important to become familiar with the application process and also for information on maintaining eligibility while attending college.

All of the TOPS Awards require 16.5 units of high school
course work constituting a core curriculum as follows:

***Beginning with the graduating class of 2008 and thereafter, an additional unit of advanced math or advanced science, for a total of 17.5 units, will be required.  The additional unit must be from among the following:
Geometry, Calculus, Pre-Calculus, Algebra III, Probability and Statistics,
Discrete mathematics, Applied mathematics, Applied Mathematics III, Advanced Math I,
Advanced Math II, Integrated mathematics III, Biology Ii, Chemistry II, Physics, or Physics II.

Minimum Core Grade Point Average--2.5
  • The grade point average fulfilling the TOPS requirement will be calculated using the grades earned in the 17 1/2 Core Curriculum courses ONLY.
  • MINIMUM ACT COMPOSITE:  20 (This may change yearly)
  • All required course work must be taken before the date of High School Graduation.
  • The ACT Test must be taken and scores received the the date of High School Graduation to receive the TOPS Award without penalties.  The June ACT Score will be accepted with a one semester of eligibility penalty for Graduates who have not previously qualified for a TOPS Award.

SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION

     The college is the best source for seeking scholarship aid.  Contact the financial aid office at the college you are interested in attending.  Investigate  the possibility of scholarships that might be offered through the company for which your parents work.  If you have a special skill or talent, talk to a teacher in that particular field about possible scholarships.
